As managers and protectors of Franklin Square, Historic Philadelphia, Inc. is proud of what we’ve done to create an urban park offering fun for everyone. But we are not finished. Oh no. There’s lots more on our agenda that will keep Franklin Square one of the crown jewels of Old City, Chinatown and Philadelphia’s historic district. Just look at what’s on our planning board:
PATCO High Speed Rail Station
After decades of non-use, the PATCO High Speed Rail Station in the corner of Franklin Square at 7th & Race Streets is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation. Slated to open next year, the station will become fully functional which will make it easier than ever for folks to visit the park and the surrounding neighborhoods. The new station will be ADA compliant with an elevator, escalator, and ramps assuring everyone can have fun at Franklin Square. Target opening is Spring, 2024. See the station design, construction progress, and more information ag FranklinSquareStation.com.
New Restrooms
Out with the old, in with the new. Demolition on the current restrooms will begin soon and in their place plans call for expanded new facilities in the same location as the current facilities. Right now, we are in the project design phase and when construction begins we will have portable facilities for our guests’ convenience. Stay tuned for more information.
An Award-Winning Playground to Get Even Better
When Franklin Square opened the park playground in 2006, it was an instant hit, winning numerous awards for its design. Since then it has become an integral part of the community, with thousands of youngsters from neighborhood day care centers, local families and park guests enjoying the facilities each year. In fact, it has become one of the most utilized neighborhood playgrounds in the city.
To make a great playground even greater, Historic Philadelphia, Inc. is in the initial stages of design and fund-raising to expand and update the equipment to engage even more age ranges and offer expanded handicap accessibility and safety.
Meanwhile, you might notice the playground is a little brighter this summer. We are currently updating the lighting with LED fixtures which will provide increased brightness during our evening hours.
