Franklin Square Capital Improvements
There is a lot happening at Franklin Square. Historic Philadelphia, Inc. is adding new amenities and updating long-time favorites to make your visit more welcoming, more accessible, more comfortable, and more fun! Historic Philadelphia, Inc. is collaborating with the City of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and local foundations, corporations, and individuals, to raise funds for capital improvements. These improvements will enable Franklin Square to remain one of the city’s favorite go-to public spaces.
Restroom Facilities
Historic Philadelphia, Inc. is excited to announce the construction of a new, expanded restroom facility in Franklin Square that is designed with a visitor’s comfort and convenience in mind. The new restrooms will have more stalls in the women’s and men’s rooms and a separate gender-neutral family restroom. Each restroom will feature a handicap-accessible stall and no-touch faucets. Look for the new facilities to be completed later in 2025.
While construction is underway, temporary restrooms are available.

Financial assistance for the restroom project was provided by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,
Honorable Josh Shapiro, Governor.
This project was financed in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Commonwealth Financing Authority.

Upgraded Lighting in Franklin Square
The Franklin Square Lighting project includes a conversion to energy efficient LED lights providing brighter lighting in Franklin Square at night. Upgraded lighting will provide increased visibility for activities during the Square’s evening hours.
Playground
The Franklin Square Playground is getting prepped for a complete makeover with lots of new ways to have fun! The new playground will celebrate the site’s cultural and historical significance while embracing the concept of nature-based play. These elements will engage young minds in learning through play while incorporating themes that reflect the creativity and imagination of Ben Franklin and embracing the rich culture of our neighbors in Chinatown. The Franklin Square Playground will be a space that is not only fun but deeply meaningful and welcoming.
