When Historic Philadelphia, Inc. (HPI) was granted the rights to renovate, operate and be the caretakers of Franklin Square in 2005, the park was riddled with overgrown weeds and debris. HPI immediately launched a comprehensive strategic plan to transform the park into a recreational resource for the community and heritage site. Weeds were replaced with green open lawns. Debris was cleared out to make way for a family-friendly mini golf course and colorful carousel that is a link to one of the city’s former industries. The broken fountain in the center of the Square was repaired with new pipes, jets and lighting. With its transformation, Franklin Square quickly became a gathering place for nearby residents and a respite for visitors.
The Franklin Square unofficial motto is “fun for everyone.”
HPI takes a broad view of its role as caretaker. Yes, park maintenance and upgrades are a top priority. We dedicate significant resources to the upkeep and improvement of the attractions and amenities; Historic Philadelphia, Inc., bears full financial responsibility for all park operations. Corporate sponsorships, foundation grants and fund-raising activities such as our annual Evening in Franklin Square and The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival enable us to protect the park and upgrade its amenities.
HPI also considers that forging connections between the park and the community is a key part of its stewardship responsibilities. That’s why the Franklin Square unofficial motto is “fun for everyone.” Throughout the year, HPI produces dozens of free activities designed to enrich the quality of life for our surrounding neighbors and engage residents from throughout the Philadelphia area.
